Tokyo is huge

I have only stayed in foreign metropolises for about a year in London, 3 days in New York, and 4 days in Paris total. In New York, after visiting the Empire State Building, baseball games, jazz performances, theaters, and Columbia University, I was bored and felt there was not much more to see.

Tokyo, on the other hand, seems very huge and deep.

First of all, the area is vast. I heard that Manhattan is about the size of the Yamanote Line, and my friend from Kyoto said that Shibuya alone must be about the size of Kyoto (although that is not true). Shinjuku is probably three times the size of Shibuya. Also, a Korean told me that in Seoul, as soon as you go by train, the scenery becomes rural soon, but in Tokyo, the cityscape continues on no matter how far you go. While taking a walk, an American soldier from Kanagawa, near Tokyo, who was driving through Tokyo in his automobile, asked me for directions. He said he had lost his bearings. He said, “Tokyo is really a big place”.

Tokyo is miscellaneous in its contents.

There are many densely populated centers, such as the Tokyo Station area, Shibuya, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and Shinbashi/Shinagawa.

While there are upscale neighborhoods such as Ginza and Aoyama with an upscale atmosphere, there are also cheap shopping areas such as Ameya Yokocho and the surrounding Okachimachi area. While there are mansions such as Denenchofu, Seijo and Shoto, there are common houses spread out to the north and east. There is the office district of Marunouchi and the entertainment district of Shinjuku.

There are also many universities, about one-third of the nation’s total. There is the electric and anime town of Akihabara, and then there are old towns like Asakusa. There is the Tsukiji market, and the factories of Ota and Sumida wards. There is Korakuen Garden and Jingu Stadium, Suntory Hall and Ueno Hall, and even the National Theatre and the New National Theatre of Japan. Looking at the parks, there is Jingu, Yoyogi, Shinjuku Gyoen, Hamarikyu, and more.

From Kanda’s used book district to pleasure quarters Kinshicho? From three-star restaurants to 500 yen ramen noodles. The variety is unmatched anywhere in the world.

Furthermore, Tokyo has a transportation network that carries people around. There are trains and buses. The subway system is probably three times as long as the one in London.

Anyway, it is a place that completely changes your impression depending on where you visit or live. And the impression a tourist who stays in Tokyo for a short time will have will be completely different.

Even though I have lived in Tokyo for quite a long time, I always make new discoveries. It is a deep and enjoyable place.
