Newsweek (English edition 2010) ranked the top 100 as follows (the best countries in the world).
The ranking is based on the following indices: education, health, standard of living, economic vitality, and political environment. Since many of the countries at the top of the list are small in population and area, Japan was at the top of the list in the group with the largest population.
One of the authors wrote that in the United States, the home country of this magazine, many of our citizens probably think we are the best, but we are mistaken.
Of course, people living in any country take for granted what is done in their own country.
In Germany, cabs were Mercedes Benzes. In Nigeria, cabs have holes in the floor. In Turkey, there are shared cabs (which stop here and there like buses).
The one thing that is common everywhere is the belief that one’s own country is the best, except perhaps for quite a few Japanese. Being an island nation, the Japanese apparently have a disposition to be unsure until told otherwise by outsiders.
Anyway, it seems certain that we Japanese live in a pretty good country. If you feel like committing suicide, you should go to Nigeria.
